Common Blue
Bedelands: 8 August 2006
Wingspan 32mm
April-October
The male is violet blue with a white fringe, the
female rich brown with orange spots. Once you
know this common species the other blue species
and allies should be easier to identify.

Common Blue
Bedelands : 23 May 2008
Wingspan 32mm
April-October
2007 and 2008 have been disastrous years for this
once very common butterfly. Both years have seen
excessive rainfall at the wrong times of the year.
Dingy Skipper
Mill Hill: 24 April 2007
Wingspan 25mm
May-August
This butterfly has, at first glance, a moth-like
appearance, but its overall brown upper and under
parts are really quite distinctive.
Duke of Burgundy
Near Storrington: 12 May 2008
Wingspan 30mm
May-June
A rare and increasingly endangered species in Sussex.

Essex Skipper
Near Bolney: 8 July 2007
Wingspan 25mm

Easily confused with the small skipper, but look
hard at the tips of the antennae, which should be
black and not orange-brown.

Note the two eyespots that differentiate this from
a meadow brown.
Gatekeeper
Haywards Heath Garden: 13 July 2007

Despite the almost incessant rain at times, the
colours seem even more vibrant than usual this year.
